Finding Balance in Movement: Yoga at Flex
We often think of being active as pushing ourselves further – lifting heavier, running faster, training harder or fitting in another workout.
But movement isn’t one-size-fits-all. Our bodies benefit from a combination of strength, mobility, challenge and recovery. Finding balance in movement is about recognising that sometimes your body needs to be challenged, and other times it needs to move differently.
Our bodies benefit from variety.
Different forms of exercise challenge us in different ways and can contribute to strength, cardiovascular fitness, flexibility, balance, coordination and joint mobility.
Yoga brings many of these elements together. Depending on the style and sequence, it can build muscular strength and endurance, improve balance and mobility, develop body awareness and coordination, and use controlled breathing to help regulate effort and focus. It can also challenge you in ways that are different from your usual training, making it a valuable addition to an active routine.
Finding the right type of movement
You don’t need to choose between ‘all or nothing’. Instead, think about what your body needs today. Some days, that might be a dynamic Vinyasa practice where you move through sequences, build strength and challenge your balance. Other days, a slower Yin practice may be more appropriate, giving you time to work through different ranges of movement and create space in areas that feel tight or restricted. Both are movement. Both have a place in a well-rounded routine.
You don’t need to be a regular yogi to benefit from yoga. For runners, gym-goers, dancers, cyclists or anyone who spends much of their day at a desk, incorporating a different style of movement into your week can be a useful way to complement what you already do.
The goal isn’t always to do more. It’s to move well, move intentionally, and give your body what it needs. And finding balance doesn’t necessarily mean doing less. It means giving your body a variety of movement to help you feel strong, mobile and ready for whatever comes next.
At Flex, our Vinyasa and Yin Yoga classes offer two different approaches to movement, whether you’re looking to build strength and flow or slow things down and work on mobility.
